Cultural Encounters: Friday Nights at the de Young presents Intersection for the Arts
"Commotion: Mood, Music and Movement"
Friday May 29, 2009, 5 - 8:45pm FREE*
On Friday nights, the de Young is open until 8:45pm. Friday Nights at the de Young offers a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, and lectures. The cafe is open with a special Friday Nights dinner menu, and a no-host cocktail bar is serving drinks. There are art-making activities for everyone.
This Friday Night at the de Young features Intersection for the Arts presenting a wide range of work that we have developed and supported over the years. This evening features live performances from:
Meklit Hadero
Meklit Hadero is a singer, musician, cultural activist and Resident Artist at the Red Poppy Art House (member of the Intersection Incubator) in San Francisco. Born in Ethiopia, she has lived in twelve cities, on three continents, and brings her international, intercultural experience to all her creative work. Lyrically focused, her solo songwriting imparts a kind of tenderness towards life, a sweetness that soars.
Angry Black White Boy
Dan Wolf's hit play adaptation of Adam Mansbach's provocative novel of the same name, features live music and is an outrageous satire about race, whiteness and Hip Hop pop-culture, identity and violence in the twenty-first century. Part of Intersection's Hybrid Project and Resident Theatre Company Campo Santo.
Denizen Kane
Denizen Kane is a poet and musician with a reputation as a precocious lyricist, style innovator, and great storyteller. He has performed on three seasons of Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam and will be featured in "The Future Project" at Intersection for the Arts in Fall 2009. Part of Intersection's Hybrid Project.
Howard Wiley and The Angola Project
Wiley investigates the roots and legacies of African American prison spirituals - encompassing folk, blues, and gospel - with music full of soul, humanity, and endurance. Featuring selections from the upcoming CD "Twelve Gates to the City." Part of Jazz at Intersection.
Master Peace
Young participants from Master Peace, a workshop led by educator and writer Jaime Cortez, read powerful excerpts from Bang the comic book created to address issues of youth and violence. Part of Intersection's Civic Life Project.
Selected pieces from Intersection's 2009 Benefit Art Auction
Get a sneak preview of a handful of works featured in Intersection's benefit art auction on Saturday, June 13 in the Mission District.

About Jazz at Intersection
In 1999 we introduced Jazz At Intersection, an intimate educational performance series exploring the history and breadth of the jazz language, where a provocative, inclusive and ever-evolving musical experience is the priority. Jazz, like other musical forms, exists in an ever changing, ever evolving continuum. Understanding the absence of a monolithic jazz paradigm, we strive to present the diversity of styles, cadences and rhythms that constitute a contemporary definition of jazz. To date, we have presented over 100 performances featuring more than 300 musicians and have premiered over 100 original compositions to our audiences. Jazz At Intersection is committed to celebrating the breadth of new music being created in our community, while engaging with the history of a constantly evolving and powerful musical tradition.
"Intersection is a perfect place for new music as well as other artistic expression. The feeling of community, togetherness, surrounds the place even before the music starts...the ambience is unequalled the whole place is part of the performance." - Philip Elwood, jazz critic
