2009 Workshops

Personal Stories for the Stage With Arline Klatte and Beth Lisick

With a firm belief that absolutely everyone has stories to tell, Porchlight curators Arline Klatte and Beth Lisick offer their first ever storytelling class.This workshop is open to people of all skill levels and backgrounds who are interested in crafting their personal stores for the stage. Participants should be prepared to share work publicly. The final class includes a performance for an invited audience. 

Since 2002 the Porchlight Storytelling Series has been San Francisco’s premier showcase for firs-person stories. 

Beth Lisick is the author of four books, including the New York Times bestsellerEverybody Into the Pool and the national bestseller Helping Me Help Myself

Arline Klatte is a native San Franciscan and former reporter for the Moscow Times. In 2002, she co-founded the Porchlight Storytelling series.

Writing & Acting with Margo Hall & Chinaka Hodge

Are you an actor or writer interested in being part of a collaborative community of artists? This workshop will allow you to explore your writing and push your work to the next level. Award winning actor and director Margo Hall, and Chinaka Hodge, playwright in residence, team up to offer this exciting workshop at Intersection for the Arts. Instructors Hall and Hodge (who are collaborating on the next Campo Santo production, Mirrors In Every Corner) will share their unique insights and expertise to writers and actors of all levels. In this workshop you will:

  • develop your writing for the stage
  • push through writers block
  • hear what your work sounds like onstage
  • give/get critique
  • actors will have the ability to work with new artists on scripts and gain experience with cold readings
  • aspiring playwrights will work to improve writing for the stage
  • actors will expand their performance vocabulary through focused monologue and partnered scene work
  • everyone will be expected to move beyond comfort zones, as all participants will be encouraged to write and act.

**Some writing and performance experience is ideal, however this workshop is open to participants of all levels.
